This fluorescent mineral showcase contains specimens from two world famous mines, the Franklin Mine in Franklin, New Jersey and the Sterling Hill Mine in Ogdensburg, New Jersey. The two ore bodies were mined for zinc, and are located approximately 3 miles apart. Together these two mines have produced more than 80 fluorescent mineral species, prompting the New Jersey state legislature on September 12, 1968 to declare the Franklin Borough “The Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World”. When it comes to brightness, color, patterns and rarity, no other place on Earth can compare to the Franklin and Sterling Hill Mines. The Franklin Mine was closed in 1954. The Sterling Hill Mine was closed in 1986.
