The book is published and printed in Italy, and is currently only available in the United States through Polman Minerals. Guido is extremely knowledgeable in the field of fluorescent minerals, and I highly recommend this book for both the beginner and expert alike. With so few books dedicated to the science of luminescence in minerals, there is good reason to obtain this one. The idea to write this book originally came about because there were no such books written in Italian. After a suggestion by a friend, Guido decided to take on the challenge. The result is a wonderful book for both the beginner and expert alike. Included in this book are discussions on the basics of mineralogy and chemistry. Immediately following is a chapter on the causes for luminescence in minerals. The author includes information on some famous collecting sites, including some found in Italy. There is even a discussion about ultraviolet lamps used in the hobby. Along with the well written and easy to understand technical information, the book includes over 400 spectacular color photographs by photographer Roberto Appiani. Many of the photographs show side by side comparisons of mineral specimens both under normal light conditions, and then after ultraviolet light excitation. After reading this book, one can really appreciate the phenomenon of luminescence in the mineral kingdom.
